On May 16, Esther Contreras, Principal in Masuda Funai’s Immigration Group, spoke at the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Spring Conference in Wisconsin. Esther’s presentation titled “Mastering I-9 Compliance: Critical Concepts to Avoid Fines” revealed reasons employers can no longer afford to ignore I-9 compliance as Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) has more than doubled the number of audits over the last entire fiscal year. Esther discussed key aspects of a robust I-9 compliance program, including proper completion, best practices, self-audits, and what to do when the government comes knocking.
